GTA 4 Remaster Reportedly in Development Ahead of GTA 6’s 2026 Release

Rockstar Games may be gearing up to release a remastered version of Grand Theft Auto IV before GTA 6 arrives.

GTA 6 Delayed to 2026, But GTA 4 Remaster Could Arrive Sooner

While fans wait for the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6, new reports suggest Rockstar Games may fill the gap with a remastered version of GTA 4. According to credible Rockstar insider Tez2, a modern port of Grand Theft Auto IV could release before the end of 2025.

Writing on the GTA forums, Tez2 said that “someone at Rockstar hinted at the IV port,” suggesting the game could be making its way to modern consoles like PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Why a GTA 4 Remaster Makes Sense Now

The timing of a GTA 4 remaster would align well with Rockstar’s roadmap. Liberty City, the iconic setting of GTA IV, also has ties to GTA 6—the game’s protagonist Lucia is originally from Liberty City. A remaster could serve as a strategic reintroduction to the location and expand the hype leading up to GTA 6's launch in 2026.

Interestingly, Tez2 noted the removal of the Liberty City Preservation Project mod could be a clue pointing to Rockstar preparing its own official remaster. In the past, Rockstar has taken similar steps ahead of releasing remastered content.

Max Payne 3 Port Could Follow

Tez2 also teased that a Max Payne 3 port may be on the way, depending on Rockstar's internal schedule. While not officially confirmed, the game could release sometime after the potential GTA 4 remaster. This news arrives as Remedy Entertainment is working on remakes of Max Payne 1 and 2, in collaboration with Rockstar Games.

Platforms for GTA 4 Remaster: What to Expect

Though details are still unofficial, the remastered version of GTA 4 is expected to target PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It’s unclear whether the Nintendo Switch or the upcoming Switch 2 will be included in the release plan.

GTA 4 Recap: A Classic Worth Revisiting

Originally released in 2008, Grand Theft Auto IV is set in Liberty City—a gritty, immersive reimagining of New York City. The story follows Niko Bellic, an Eastern European immigrant navigating the American criminal underworld. The game was a critical and commercial success, praised for its realism, storytelling, and open-world design.

Conclusion: A Strategic Move Before GTA 6

If these rumors prove true, a GTA 4 remaster could be a perfect way to reignite interest in the Grand Theft Auto franchise ahead of GTA 6's 2026 release. While Rockstar has not officially confirmed these plans, the track record of insider Tez2 and the removal of fan mods suggest there may be fire behind the smoke.
