Resident Evil 9 Likely Skipping State of Play – Capcom’s Sony Deal Reportedly Ended
Rumors surrounding Resident Evil 9 have been building for months, with fans eagerly awaiting an official reveal. While many expected Capcom to unveil the next entry in the Resident Evil series during Sony’s upcoming State of Play, new information suggests otherwise.
Capcom May Skip Sony’s State of Play for Resident Evil 9 Reveal
According to industry insider Dusk Golem, Capcom may not showcase Resident Evil 9 at the June State of Play 2025. This change is reportedly due to the end of a multi-year marketing partnership between Sony and Capcom.
“Capcom and Sony had a multi-year deal for Resident Evil marketing on games above a certain budget that ended in 2024 that Capcom chose not to renew,” Dusk Golem shared on X (formerly Twitter).
Although the collaboration between the two gaming giants has ended, Dusk Golem noted that Capcom and Sony still maintain a good relationship. Future Resident Evil titles may still appear at PlayStation events, but such appearances will now be decided on a title-by-title basis rather than being contractually obligated.
Summer Game Fest 2025: The New Home for Resident Evil 9?
Dusk Golem speculates that Summer Game Fest 2025 could be the platform where Capcom reveals Resident Evil 9. While the insider admits they are not certain of Capcom’s exact plans, they believe it’s a “potential way they might play it.”
What This Means for Fans
With the end of the Capcom-Sony Resident Evil marketing deal, Capcom now has more flexibility in choosing when and where to reveal its upcoming games. This could lead to more varied showcase events, such as Gamescom, The Game Awards, or Summer Game Fest.
For now, fans of the survival horror franchise should keep an eye on Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest, which could become the stage for the long-awaited Resident Evil 9 reveal.
