Sony Gradually Winds Down PS4 Game Development, Transitioning Fully to PS5 by 2025
Sony is preparing to wind down its focus on the PlayStation 4, setting 2025 as the year it will step back from creating new first-party titles for the platform. While that marks a clear shift towards the PlayStation 5, it doesn’t mean the PS4 will become obsolete overnight.
First-party Games Phased Out
Sony won’t be releasing any new PS4-exclusive games from its internal studios beyond 2025. The company's development resources will increasingly shift to the PS5 moving forward.
Legacy Titles Still Accessible
Despite the change, the PS4’s existing catalog remains intact. Gamers will still be able to buy, download, and enjoy older titles — especially the strong lineup of first-party games from past years.
Multiplatform Support Lives On
Certain third-party developers may continue to release games compatible with both PS4 and PS5 for a period beyond 2025, though support is expected to taper off over time.
PlayStation Plus Adjustments
Starting January 2026, new PS4 titles will no longer be a central part of PlayStation Plus. However, players may still see some cross-gen titles that work on both systems included in the service.
Online Services Continue (For Now)
Sony will continue to support multiplayer and online functionality on PS4 for the foreseeable future. That said, the company’s primary attention will increasingly be centered on PS5 infrastructure and services.
In short, while new content is winding down, the PS4 isn’t being shut off — it remains a viable platform for legacy gaming and certain shared releases as the industry fully shifts to the new generation.
