PS5 vs. PS4: Aligned Sales Comparison in the US (As of June 2025)
Each month, we take a closer look at how current and past gaming consoles stack up against each other in terms of sales. This ongoing series focuses on comparing PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 sales in the United States, based on our own hardware sales estimates. While we also cover global sales, as well as data from Europe and Japan, this article zeroes in on the U.S. market.
The PlayStation 5 hit store shelves in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched back in November 2013. That means their timelines line up nicely for direct monthly comparisons, including matching holiday seasons.
How Are They Tracking?
As of June 2025, we’re now 57 months into the PS5's lifecycle. During this most recent month, the PS4 closed the gap by outselling the PS5 by 82,955 units. However, when looking at the past year as a whole, the PS5 actually pulled ahead, selling 39,237 more consoles than the PS4 over the same aligned period.
Despite the recent monthly slip, the PS5 is still in the lead overall. So far, it’s sold 26.32 million units, compared to the 24.88 million units the PS4 had sold by this point in its lifecycle — putting the PS5 ahead by 1.43 million units.
To give more context: the PS4 reached the 25 million mark in month 57 (which lines up with June 2025 for PS5) and eventually hit 30 million in month 71. In total, the PS4 sold 34.93 million units in the U.S. during its lifetime. That means the PS5 still has about 8.61 million units to go before catching up to its predecessor’s all-time U.S. sales.
