I Didn't Expect to Enjoy Death Stranding 2: On the Beach—But I Did
I’ll be honest—I didn’t care for the first Death Stranding. As much as I admire Hideo Kojima’s work, that game just didn’t land for me. I found it slow, repetitive, and nowhere near as engaging as the Metal Gear Solid series. So, when I heard a sequel was on the way, I wasn’t exactly counting down the days.
But now, after spending serious time with Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, I’ve got to admit—it won me over.
The game picks up with Sam Bridges, living a quiet life with a toddler version of Lou (his BB from the original). Things don’t stay quiet for long. Soon enough, he’s pulled back into the life of a porter, traversing massive stretches of land—this time across Mexico and Australia. Fragile returns and ropes Sam into a bigger mission, involving a crew, a massive ship called the DHV Magellan, and of course, some truly weird Kojima storytelling. No spoilers, but it's everything you'd expect—just a bit more grounded, and surprisingly, more entertaining.
Even with some repetitive mission types and the usual overly cryptic Kojima dialogue, the experience overall feels tighter and more purposeful. The visuals are also jaw-dropping, especially on next-gen hardware. It’s a strange game, still unlike anything else out there—but it’s one I’m glad I gave a second chance
